In Cloud Nine, playwright Caryl Churchill carefully examines the effect of rigid gender roles learned by both men and women in Western society.  The first act satirizes the repressive nature of the Victorian family.  Act two takes place in London one hundred years later with mostly the same characters, who have aged only twenty- five years.
